Sustained and Percussive Movement

Exploring the opposite energies of sustained and percussive movement; dancers are learning new dance vocabularies for their bodies. We worked with the summer book Sun Dance, Water Dance. Vibrant sun rays helped us explore percussive movement with straight arms, angles, and starts and stops. Water waves and running rivers inspired us to move in continual, flowing, sustained ways. As we transition in to fall and to finish our study we are making a beautiful art project to show the growing sustained trunk and branches of a tree with leaves that flicker with sporadic, percussive bold colors. I am so pleased with the way the dancers have incorporated these two movement qualities in to their own dancing. Aren't they awesome?!
